Ethical guidelines for end-of-life doulas (LOHTU® AKATEMIA, my translation)
Ethical guidelines for end-of-life doulas
I commit to the ethical guidelines for end-of-life doulas:
Respect for human dignity
In their work, doulas respect and value every human life and see each person as unique.
A doula treats everyone accordingly and protects her clients from anything that threatens
their privacy and diminishes the dignity of life.
A doula works with other professionals employed by the client and assists the client in communicating their wishes to them.
However, a doula does not take a position on decisions related to the specific expertise of other professionals, such as healthcare professionals.
Anonymity and confidentiality
A doula respects the confidentiality of information related to each person's identity and client relationship in every way.
All client-specific information related to the doula's work remains confidential, and the doula does not disclose any information related to the client relationship unless otherwise agreed with the client. Such an agreement must be recorded and verified by both parties.
Equality
A doula treats everyone equally, regardless of their origin, age, gender, beliefs, values, or status.
A doula actively promotes equality in her role.
Self-determination
A doula respects everyone's right to self-determination and free will, as well as their right to physical and psychological integrity.
A doula also respects the wishes of clients who are unable to express them themselves.
Supporting peers
Doulas support their colleagues and those who wish to become doulas. They share their knowledge and experience to support the doula community so that it can develop and create new forms of support for those who need it.
